How to speed-test your 3G connection

Speedtest.net has developed a free mobile app for iPhone and Google Android devices. It measures the speed of a web connection using the first access point, which could be your Wi-Fi or 3G connection.

Download the Speedtest.net app from the Android Market or iTunes App store. Next, enter the Apps menu and click the Speedtest icon to launch the application. You’ll need to ensure that Wi-Fi is turned off if you wish to test the 3G connection speed.

Click ‘Begin Test’ and the app will measure your mobile broadband connection’s upload, download and Ping speeds. Once complete, the results will be displayed onscreen.

You can access results from previous tests by clicking the Result button at the bottom of the screen. This will distinguish between Wi-Fi and 3G speed tests, and help you work out when it may be preferable to use one type of connection over the other.

Open Speedtest’s Settings menu to alter the way your speed results are measured and displayed. You can also change the server that Speedtest accesses to perform its calculations, and sort the test results by date or speed.
